Delivering on the Promise of Scouting

Introduction

Robert Baden-Powell was a British General who was a hero of the Boer War in southern Africa and the founder of the World-wide Scouting Movement.

His goal was to provide a programme of physical and moral development for young men who would become our future leaders.

He defined Scouting as a "game with a purpose" and he and his wife committed themselves to the delivery the Scouting programme for the balance of their lives.

Our challenge is to prepare ourselves to continue to deliver on this "Promise of Scouting" and training courses are major tools and a whole lot of fun!  We hope that you consider improving your skills through Scouting's courses.

Who Staffs these courses?

The courses offered by Packs, Troops, Crews, the Twin Valleys District and the Northern New Jersey Council are run by volunteers such as yourself.  Folks with experience and training in the areas presented donate their time to make your training experience and your child's Scouting experience more fun and safe!

One of the best ways to improve your skills is to teach or participate in some other way in the delivery of these courses.  Please let us know if you have specific skills that you might want to share!

Common Training

Where to Start?
All leaders need two training courses to start:

Helpful extras for the programme
These courses are required depending on the nature of your Den, Pack, Troop or Venture Crew activities and are offered through the Twin Valleys District, the Northern New Jersey Council, Troop 139 or other agencies.
Cub Scouts
Each one of these courses takes a few hours in an evening or half-day session.
These courses are usually given at the monthly Roundtable Meetings or at other times.
Each one addresses programme ideas and the age-specific needs of the boys.
When one of the above listed sections and both New Leader Essentials and Youth Protection have been completed, you are a Trained Cub Scout Leader.

Boy Scouts
There are two specific parts for Boy Scout Leaders

Venturing
There are two specific parts for Venture Leaders:
Continuing & Advanced Training
As you become more involved in Scouting, there are advanced training activities that you will find helpful, put you at ease and enhance the fun that the kids and adults have in Scouting.

Wood-Badge
This is a two weekend, professional-quality leadership and communications training activity that includes an on-going set of projects that are completed during the 18-22 months following the course.

This is open to Cub Scout Leaders, Boy Scout Leaders or Venture Crew Leaders and is a wonderful experience!

This course requires that you are already a trained Cub Scout Leaders, Boy Scout Leaders or Venture Crew Leader and is given in this Council in the late summer and early fall.

Pow-Wow

Venturing Outdoor Skills
This is given for both adults and older Venturers.  It is not a required course for any specific activity, but it helps everyone have more fun in a safe environment.

Camp School
This is a weekend or week-long position-specific course usually taken by summer camp staff members, but subject to there being an open slot, other unit leaders are welcome to attend.  Areas include Camp Director, Programme Director, Commissioner, Waterfront, Scoutcraft, COPE, Climbing and Rappelling and Voyager tracks.  These courses are given through the winter and spring of each year.

Other Positions
Merit badge Counselor - This position requires a simple orientation for Boy Scout Merit Badge Counselors and Youth Protection.

Committee Chair - This is for Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop or Venture Crew Chairpersons.  This is often given when Cub Scout Leader Training is offered and follows New Leader Essentials and Youth Protection.

Unit Commissioner Training - This is given as a one day event once per year to very experienced leaders who provide background programme support to other unit leaders.
